Duncan's Rainbow Residency

Memories of Duncan

Duncan was a little over a year old when he was adopted from the Picayune, Mississippi SPCA in July 2002. Alice's previous partner, Bob, had died two weeks prior from kidney disease. She was 7 years old at the time and had never been alone, so it was decided she should have another partner. Duncan was a delightful kitty and was very energetic. Having spent his entire first year with dogs, cats and kind humans, Duncan knew no fear. He was very vocal and would run to the door to greet all guests telling them "hello" through his insistent meows.

As a young cat, he loved to attack ankles and toes. It was very difficult to go to sleep as any movement at the bottom of the bed would have him pouncing like a lion. Changing bed linens was another chore when Duncan was around. He would race to the bed and quickly burrow under the fitted sheet. My lovely friend and housekeeper, Natalie, would kindly tuck all four corners around the fitted sheet with a big lump of fur underneath. He was also a little upset that she was constantly removing his scent from the floors and counters, so he would frequently leave her little "presents" in the dining room she would clean up without issue.

Duncan was always a sun lover and getting him a large, three story "cat condo" was the best investment I ever made. He loved the very top of the tower (his Penthouse Suite) and would soak up the rays for hours. Even as he got sick, his condo was his home. In his final weeks, he would find solace on the very bottom shelf as he could still see all the action but feel safe and protected.

Throughout his life, he converted many a dog lover. I can't recall the number of times I've heard, "I still don't like cats, but I love Duncan." He loved playing chase, having his belly rubbed and playing "where's Duncan?" under a sheet or blanket. He loved his partner, Alice, and kept her youthful with his playfulness. He was a perfect gentleman, always allowing her to eat or drink first from their shared bowls and he would often groom her to ensure she was presentable as a lady should be. While he was the extrovert, always in the spotlight and garnered 99% of the attention, she was the wind beneath his proverbial wings.

Duncan had an affinity for running water. He loved to jump on the bathroom counter and drink from the running faucet. He became so spoiled, I had to purchase a fancy running water drinking fountain just to get him to hydrate. He would also come into the bathroom while I was showering, stick his little ginger head around the curtain and lick the water droplets off the shower wall. He was very finicky with food, unlike his partner Alice. Duncan did not like table scraps and only enjoyed cheese and one brand of kitty treat. He would drink tuna juice, but not eat the tuna. If you sat a plate on the floor with a single bite of food still on it, he would trot right over and attempt to bury it kicking his back paws behind him.

Duncan was a most curious cat and loved windows. When we lived in a hotel in Jackson, Mississippi for nine months, I put up a covered kitty ledge in the sill on the second floor of our penthouse room. He could survey all they land and the housekeepers enjoyed looking for him every day. He became the "resident cat" of the Residence Inn. When we finally moved back to Louisiana, I had an addition built onto the back of my home for a kitty sun room. My dear friend, Henry, suggested we make all six window sills a couple of inches wider to accommodate Duncan's big butt. I do not regret that decision as he loved moving to each window sill watching the squirrels and birds in the back yard. Besides lounging in the sun, Duncan also loved sleeping on the back of sofas. He made a wonderful head/neck rest and enjoyed having his humans rub his tummy with their heads. I think his dominant self enjoyed sitting higher than everyone else in the room.
