Memories of Lily
Lily was the last of her litter when we got her. She was the runt. The first time we lay eyes on her she sat beside her mommy with her front paws planted firmly in front and her head held high. It was an open, friendly poise that she never lost. I have pictures of her, Dizel (her mate), and Daisy (her daughter) dressed up for Halloween or Christmas. Dizel and Daisy have an uncomfortable, almost embarrassed look, sulking some in their outfits. But not Lily. She sits there with front paws wide and planted firmly, her head high, a comfortable smile on her face.
I have loved all my dogs equally. Each has its own personality. But the word that describes Lily's disposition best is "sweet". Sweet Lily is what I called her because she was the epitome of the word. She loved everyone, and was as kind a dog as you will find. The others chased squirrels and cats. But not Lily. She wouldn't of hurt a fly. She only wanted to receive and give love. At night, in bed, she would lick my face for as long as I let her. And I usually lay there several minutes, letting her sweet doggie kisses rain down and cherishing her love. I would eventually tell her it was time to sleep and hug her good night. Even after that I sometimes would be woke by even more kisses.
She raised two litters of puppies, five in each one. And she was the perfect mommy you expect a dog of her character to be. Daisy was the one from her first litter we kept and the two of them bonded closely. Daisy had a habit of licking and chewing her mommy's ears and Lily would allow it for however long her daughter did this. Most of the photos I have of Lily include Daisy. Usually Lily, the smaller one, lying in front of Daisy while Daisy rests her head on Lily's back. They were almost inseparable.
Lily loved to eat. Seldom did I go to the kitchen without her following me. When I cooked she was at my feet, looking for a dropped morsel of food. We couldn't possibly give her a snack or a bite of food whenever she wanted, she was already a little overweight but I too often caved in and allowed her a small snack. There was just too much sweetness in her eyes.
There are many stories of her I can tell but I think Lily would want me to write a funny one. She was never one to roam much but once she got it in her head that she wanted to see what was on the other side of a neighbor's wooden fence. She must've been determined about this because she didn't listen as I called her to come back while she ran across the yard and to the fence. There was a small hole at the bottom of the fence, just big enough for Lily. I was still yelling for her to come back when she carefully slipped through the hole and disappeared. There was about a three second interval then a loud growl followed by as high pitched squealing as I ever heard. Lily shot back through the hole, ears laid back and tail held tight between her legs. A large dog's snout popped through the hole seconds after Lily emerged. Lily, still squealing, shot across the yard like a black streak. Within seconds she was at my feet. She wasn't bit or hurt at all but was forever broken from being curious again.
She liked hiding her chewy bones in the most creative ways. The usual hiding of a chewy bone would take a good ten minutes. She would carry it to every room, looking for just the right spot. She would find a place, hide the bone, then unsatisfied, pick it back up and search for another spot. My wife and son have found bones tucked away in their shoes several times. I wonder now where there still may be some hidden in the most inconspicuous places of our house.
She left us before we were ready. It was sudden and unexpected. I wish we could've been more prepared, but she suffered very little. I think it was her enlarged heart that just gave out. It hurts so bad and our house seems a lot more empty. Daisy misses her, but we are looking for her another companion though none can possibly replace Lily.
As we grieve I wonder what would Lily say if she could. I'm certain the first thing would be "don't cry. Remember our happy times." Also she would say to express your love to those close to you every day because each could be your last with them. Show kindness to everyone. Be gentle and caring. Let those you love know how much you love them before you go to sleep at night. These are the lessons I learned from Lily. I wonder how much better this world would be if everyone could be more like Lily.
